What are the accommodations like?

Operated by Clair Tappaan, the Hutchinson Lodge is within easy walking distance of the main lodge, but far enough away to have a feeling of solitude. Built in 1924 as a winter retreat for lovers of the Sierra Nevada, Hutchinson Lodge, originally named the Sierra Ski Club, is a rustic, un-staffed lodge situated in the woods next door to Clair Tappaan Lodge. It is enjoyed year-round by a variety of groups. Guests bring their own bedding, towels, toiletries, and food. The lodge has a fully equipped kitchen, two sleeping lofts with sleeping pads, a 8-person sauna, showers, and toilets. Two efficient wood burning stoves provide heat. Max capacity is about 25.

What is the closest airport?

The closest airport to Tahoe is Reno, NV (RNO) or Sacramento, CA.

Booking airfare?

If you are flying in for this trip, please contact us before booking airfare to make sure that your trip is confirmed. We require a minimum number of participants to operate.

General weather expectations

Sierra daytime temperatures at this time of year can range between 45 to 55 degrees F, with overnight lows dropping to the 20s - 30s. This course is all about getting you prepared and comfortable for variable weather.

“Dear women adventurers of all skill levels, you need to take a trip with Alpinistas! I just returned from the Cold Weather Skills workshop in Yosemite and I've learned more in three days than I have in all my years of hiking and camping. It's so rare to find guiding experiences that are fun, connect you with likeminded folks, AND equip you with a ton of new skills.”

— Ashley

“I had the absolute best experience on a rock climbing trip with Joanne’s Team! Every part of the weekend was fantastic - the camping experience was wonderful, the guides were knowledgeable and kept everyone safe, and the climbing was so much fun! I'm looking forward to future trips with Alpinistas, and love the work they are doing in making outdoor education more accessible to women!”
